Linnaea Arlequin 2011
Linnaea Arlequin
2011
Cabernet Sauvignon

Heathcote, Victoria

Tasting Notes

At once both lithe and libertine, steeped in whimsical quicksilver, our jester relegates folly to the darkest corners of the Royal Court. Born in a maddening storm that might have shaken Zeus to the bones, this wine returns cavorting merriment to the subtle refugia of the banal, for a wise woman once said there is little to gain by caution and little to lose by candour. Steeped in blueberry, rose hips, plum, violets, airy dried floral aromatics with just a sniff of leather, the Linnaea Arlequin 2011 defies the vicissitudes of the Nephelae and delivers a feast for fools. A well structured, old world mouthfeel dancing with orange oil, plum, soy, and food-craving brightness, this Cabernet Sauvignon dares entertain without being too demanding of your attention. A friend in merry-making and memory-making, shaking its bells at the havoc cast about.

2010
Barolo D.O.C.G.

Piemonte, Italy

Tasting Notes

Stumbling upon him, it seemed inconsequential, a chance encounter with a handsome stranger quietly surveying the beguiling mottles of yellow and grey on the hillside below us. The wet fog swirled about. Peering out from under the tattered brim of a fraying felt hat, his light-coloured eyes told of mystery, of a tradition born by his great grandfather; this, the secret life of a trifulau, inextricably rooted into the argillic white soils of these majestic ageing hillsides. Borne of this very same soil, entwined within the roots of this secret cult of
truffle-hunters, comes our inaugural Barolo, equally complex and mysterious. As Gary Walsh opines...Throws a wondrous perfume of liquorice root, chocolate and dark cherries with rose oil wafting above, bottom firmly ensconced on the sweet folds of an old Chesterfield lounge. And gloriously traditional it is too – firm and sure in the mouth with a spread of fine-grained tannin allied to just the right amount of dark fruit, tea and spice. Has a vivacious yet fleshy finish of good length with a ring of clear acidity.

Linnaea Apica
2014
Moscato D'Asti DOCG

Piemonte, Italy

Tasting Notes

Like bees to honey the attraction to our 2014 Linnaea Apica Moscato D’Asti DOCG is pure and irresistible. Pop the cork and a cheerful mix of ginger flowers, honeyed apricots, citrus, white peach and honeysuckle scents come bubbling right out behind it. Grab a cup, deliver a dram, and delight in an eager palate replete with sparkling, refreshing, creamy sweet succulence that is balanced with a crisp perfumed acidity. Nothing edgy, nothing over the top, just the promise of enhanced memories amongst friends and loved ones, and low alcohol to boot. Picnics are made more perfect, brunches more brunchy and life’s traditions more bright. The bees knew a thing or two about this grape, and had a good time pollinating it. Add some sophistication and our spin on traditional Italian winemaking, and we get to enjoy the bounty of Linnaea Apica Moscato D’Asti made from those very same grapes.

Historia Linnaeum

Stemming from the middle name of our daughter, Linnaea Vineyards is the personal wine label of husband and wife team Michelle Edwards and Daniel Fischl. We will concentrate on producing small batches of intelligent wines from some of the world's most interesting wine regions.

The science nerds amongst you will notice that our wine names are based upon the Linnaean Binomial System of genus + species, created by naturalist and innovator Carl Linnaeus. The first project brings us Linnaea Rhizotomi, a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Howell Mountain region of Napa Valley. Our first Italian project brings to our shores Linnaea Apica, a delightfully playful Moscato D’Asti from Piedmont Italy. Now, we introduce our first home-grown wine, Linnaea Arlequin, a cavortingly opulent Cabernet Sauvignon from Heathcote in Victoria. Still to come, our Barolo project is edging tantalisingly closer...

Nascent Linnaea projects include a Cortese Dell'Alto Monferrato from
Piedmont, Italy and both red and white wines from some sneaky corners of
Australia.

Grab your monocle and view SOME PHOTOS of the birth of the Linnaean species.
