Historia Linnaeum

Stemming from the middle name of our daughter, Linnaea Vineyards is the personal wine label of husband and wife team Michelle Edwards and Daniel Fischl. We will concentrate on producing small batches of intelligent wines from some of the worlds most interesting wine regions.

*

Michelle is humbled by wine. She studied wine for far too long, yet still somehow studies it to this day. Having cut her oenological teeth in Washington state, Davis California, and outback Australia, she has been fortunate enough since then to coax her porphyritic hands into crafting halcyon California wines at such prestigious sites as Colgin Cellars, Cliff Lede Vineyards and Bryant Family Vineyards in Napa Valley, and Peter Michael Winery in Sonoma Valley. She continues to advise in Napa and Sonoma Valleys, complementing her winemaking projects in Napa, Sonoma, Italy, and Victoria.

Daniel is the starry-eyed provocateur behind many great wines, demanding perfection from every vineyard. With 15 years of history exploring the intimacies of grapes, from the smallest
of genes to the largest vineyard ecosystems, he is currently a viticultural advisor in Napa, Sonoma, Israel, and large tracts of Victoria. He has most recently spent the last half-decade as the Agricultural Scientist and Senior Viticulturist for David Abreu Vineyard Management, Vineyard Manager for numerous legendary Napa Valley wines.

The science nerds amongst you will notice that our wine names are based upon the Linnaean Binomial System of genus + species, created by naturalist and innovator Carl Linnaeus. The first project brings us Linnaea Rhizotomi, a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Howell Mountain region of Napa Valley. Our newest project brings to our shores Linnaea Apica, a delightfully playful Moscato D’Asti from Piedmont Italy.

Nascent Linnaea projects include Barolo also from Piedmont, Italy and both red and white wines from Victoria, Australia.

This Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon represents
the anatomy of a mountain. Sourced from three
vineyards, this wine is fashioned from grapes grown on
a rocky knoll at the top of Howell Mountain, a broad
shelf of volcanic detritus halfway up, and an ashy deposit
at the foot of Howell Mountain. Native fermentation.
158 cases produced.

The rhizotomi were the forefathers of chemists
and medics. They had intimate knowledge of the
plants, when to collect, the seasons, their medicinal
effects and so on, eventually corralling their missives
into their own private herbaria. This wine pays respect
to the source of our fruit: the personal vineyards of
doctors, true modern day rhizotomi.

Tasting Notes

Bemused by wine’s hilarious flirtation with the human persona, we picture this wine curtseying on a tightrope, strung between the well-tailored decadence of the sublime dandy and the brooding somnolence of a beat poet. Ganache, sandalwood, ambery rose and citrus cherry stuffed into a chypre belly are a few of the lasting impressions. Close your eyes just long enough and diffusions of sun-baked basalt amid wafting petrichor give a hint of this wine’s where-from. While an enticing orchestration of flavours keeps you slurping, its dripping fattiness with soaring mouthfuls of blue and black fruit intensity play seductively against a minerality that dares to betray its own seamlessness but can’t. Hyperbole? Perhaps, but see for yourself. Patience will be rewarded with decadence, so decanting is necessary in its infancy. Roll out the red carpet, she’s here dressed to the nines...

Tasting Notes

Like bees to honey the attraction to our 2011 Linnaea Apica Moscato D’Asti DOCG is pure and irresistible. Pop the cork and a cheerful mix of honeyed apricots, citrus floral, white peach and honeysuckle scents come bubbling right out behind it. Grab a cup, deliver a dram, and delight in an eager palate replete with sparkling, refreshing, creamy sweet succulence that is balanced with a crisp perfumed acidity. Nothing edgy, nothing over the top, just the promise of enhanced memories amongst friends and loved ones, and low alcohol to boot. Picnics are made more perfect, brunches more brunchy and life’s traditions more bright. The bees knew a thing or two about this grape, and had a good time pollinating it. Add some sophistication and our spin on traditional Italian winemaking, and we get to enjoy the bounty of Linnaea Apica Moscato D’Asti made from those very same grapes.
